A 17-year-old resident of McKinney has been taken into federal custody on suspicion of orchestrating an assassination attempt against Representative Keith Self, a move that has intensified security protocols for the North Texas lawmaker.
The arrest, carried out by the FBI on October 5, was communicated to the congressman's team by U.S. Capitol Police the following day. According to campaign officials, investigators determined that the teenager had been radicalized and was under federal surveillance. Authorities alleged that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in support of ISIS, specifically targeting Self at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was to feature former professional football players and other prominent guests.
Representative Self, who is currently seeking a third term in office, stated that his response was guided by his extensive background in military combat. He noted that while others might panic upon learning of a targeted threat, his experience allowed him to remain calm and assess whether the suspect was acting alone. His wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also shared in the seriousness of the situation. Self acknowledged that while he had received threats in the past, this was the first instance where the threat level led to a formal arrest.
Despite the heightened risk, the congressman attended the targeted fundraiser as planned. He reported judging 19 different chili entries and three varieties of beans at the event, noting that the occasion proceeded without incident. Since then, he has maintained his regular campaigning schedule, including greeting voters at polling stations, asserting that the plot would not hinder his efforts to inform the public about current political ideologies.
The incident occurs amidst a broader political context in which Self has taken a prominent stance against the implementation of Sharia law in the United States. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution declaring the U.S. Constitution the supreme law of the land. Furthermore, his congressional district, which encompasses McKinney, has seen significant public debate regarding the expansion of a local mosque, a plan approved by the city council in August following contentious public comment.
In response to the news, Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, publicly condemned the alleged plot on social media. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released to the public as the federal investigation continues. The FBI’s Dallas office has been contacted for further details but has not yet provided a statement.
As early voting continues across the state, the congressional team has increased its situational awareness to ensure the safety of the representative and his staff. The campaign continues to monitor developments while the lawmaker maintains his active presence in the district.
